Airport
Hamburg airport is not big, you won't get lost. Look for the green signs for public transport via line S1 into town.
See network map and tickets below.
Stadtpark
1 - Subway "Borgweg" (Line U3)
2 - Subway "Saarlandstraße" (Line U3)
3 - Subway "Alte Wöhr" (Line S1)
4 - Concert ground (stage probably at the lake)
5 - Planetarium
On the Planetarium there is a small viewing balcony - nice view over the Stadtpark. Can be reached via elevator. Free entry.
There are some beer gardens / restaurants around.
Sierich's Biergarten has recently opened (former Schumachers Biergarten).
It's nicely located at the opposite side of the Stadtparksee. They offer an event "Listen to the Stones" for
people without tickets.
Traffic & Car parking: See here.
Official information page of the organizer in English and German
Access by public transport (German only)
Weather
I hope the weather will be fine, but in general Hamburg / northern Germany is known for being "rough" sometimes.
Especially in the harbour area it can be cold and windy at times.
Bring some warm clothes and a rain jacket!
Public transport
You can get everywhere quickly and easy by the subway (U-Bahn and S-Bahn).
Network map
Service on weekdays until ca. 0:45 am.
Service on saturday and sunday 24 h.
The ticket machines support English, but here's some info up-front:
Fares are arranged in rings around the city center. "Ring AB" covers most of Hamburg and that's all you will need.
- 9 am Day Ticket (9-Uhr-Tageskarte) for ring AB: 6.20€
->Recommended: Valid 9 am until 6 am the following morning, all day on Sat + Sun, as many rides as you like.
->Valid for all subways, busses and also the harbour ferries.
- All Day Ticket (Ganztageskarte) for ring AB: 7.60€
->Same as above if go want to start before 9 am.
- 9 am Group Ticket (9-Uhr-Gruppenkarte) for ring AB: 11.80€
->Recomended: Same validity as above, for a group of up to 5 persons (which must ride together :).
->Valid for all subways, busses and also the harbour ferries.
- Single (one-way) ticket for ring AB: 3.20€
->only useful for a single trip from A to B.
Note: The ticket for the show includes public transportation to and from the venue.

Tourism
Hamburg is beautiful and there are of course countless attractions and things you can do in Hamburg.
But due to our limited time I will list only some "must see" items. Although I've lived in Hamburg until finishing university
and we still visit the city (i.e. my mom) at least once a year, these are the places we always go again :-)
Most of the following can be found on this website (german version)
- Harbour area
- Landungsbrücken
A harbour boat trip is always a nice thing to do. There are several organizers, different ships, differnt length (1 or 2 hours) etc.
I don't know if there are English guided trips as well.
If you don't want to spend the money and you already have a HVV day ticket (see above), you can also take a public Elbe ferry.
The best line is "62", which goes from Landungsbrücken to Finkenwerder and back in about 1 hour.
Tip: Hop off the ferry at Övelgönne and take a walk along the Elbe beach.
-
Cross the river by walking through the Old Elbe Tunnel.
The entrance with the historic four large lift cages is quite interesting, but to be honest, you don't have to walk the whole tunnel because on the
opposite side there's nothing spectacular.
-
If you want to eat something typical Hamburg-ish, try a Fish Sandwich (german: Fischbrötchen), preferably the variant with salted hering (german: Matjes) :-)
-
Speicherstadt - the world's largest contiguous warehouse complex.
-
Elbphilarmonie - Hamburg's new landmark.
The architecture of the building itself is a matter of taste, but you should visit the "Plaza".
From there, enjoy a unique 360° panoramic view of the port, the Elbe and the city.
The entrance to the Plaza is free, but you need to grab a ticket at one of the counters. You might have to wait some time if there is a big rush.
Open 9 am to midnight (I think), but closed on Thursday September 7th due to some non-public event.
-
The Hamburg Cruise days take place on 8th - 10th September.
"Ten large cruise ships will enter the Port of Hamburg and moor there. The “Blue Port” light show by theatre producer, writer and light artist Michael Batz will illuminate the port in blue light at night, creating a breath-taking installation."
-
Town Hall / River Alster area
- Townhall
Don't miss to go inside and also visit the courtyard at the backside.
-
Jungfernstieg promenade at the river Alster.
(For the ladies: Luxary shopping in the sidestreet "Neuer Wall" and surrounding area.)
-
At the Junfernstieg there is the main pier where the Alster boat trips start.
You can make the Alster Round Trip (1 hour)
or the Canal trip (2 hours).
Note: The Canal trip offers two different routes, one of them going to the "Stadtparksee" - right behind the Rolling Stones' stage :-)
According to their website they offer a free English audio guide - ask the captain.
-
If you need a rest, you can wander through nearby Planten & Blomen park (Hamburg dialect for "Plants & Flowers").
-
Bars / Restaurants / Suggestions for meeting places
-
Suggestions by Axel:
Borchers
Goldbeker
Europäischer Hof
Fischereihafen Restaurant"
-
Strandpauli beach club is quite unique. Not sure how long it's open at night.
Maybe we can find something at the "Hamburger Berg" (north sidestreet of Reeperbahn).
Maybe we can find something at the "Hans Albers Platz" (south side of Reeperbahn)
-
Reeperbahn
All kinds of bars, clubs, pubs, entertainment and - yes - sex shops :-o
On weekdays there's not much going on, but the action starts on weekend nights.
These days it's safe to go there, but still you better don't go alone and don't dive into dark corners :)
-
In the sidestreet "Große Freiheit" you can find a plaque where once the Star Club was located.
It's a little hard to find - study the map on the website. The original building is not existing any more.
(swiped from IORR)
Have a safe trip, have a nice stay and ... see you in Hamburg!!! :-)
